Pictures are often the way we first encounter the world outside our immediate experience. Making pictures, as an aid to understanding, categorising and claiming was an important part of the colonial project. Representation styles as well as subjects were transported to Aotearoa New Zealand, and adapted for the local environment. Versions of these representations have been translated into designs for publications, objects, decorations and ornamentation.
Cathy Tuato’o Ross was born in Palmerston North in 1975. She gained a BFA from Otago School of Art in 1996, an MFA from RMIT University, Melbourne, in 2001 and a PhD from the University of Otago in 2010. She lives in Whangarei, making photographs, drawing and working as an independent researcher and art-writer.
