Handshake Weed presents 16 photographs from The Sun Sets Beneath the Ocean, Zahra Killeen-Chance and Solomon Mortimer’s 2023 book and exhibition at Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui. The photographs were made during the time of Aotearoa’s second covid lockdown while the artists were in residence at Tylee Cottage, Whanganui. The works are part of an ongoing collaboration, but also record the suddenly circumscribed days of lockdown as experienced in an unfamiliar city — a time Mortimer has described as spent chasing shadows and light bars.

The Sun Sets Beneath the Ocean was published by the Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui with the support of Creative New Zealand. Foreword by Sarjeant Gallery curator, Greg Donson; image sequencing by Ben Davis; design by Solomon Mortimer; typography by Joseph Salmon; cover image by Richard Killeen. Tri-fold insert with essay by Greg Donson and responses by Tylee Cottage Artist Residency alumni, Conor Clarke, Marie Shannon, Roberta Thornley and Richard Orjis.

A Tāmaki Makaurau Book Launch for The Sun Sets Beneath the Ocean will be held in the Handshake Weed exhibition on Saturday 23 September at 3pm Edition of 200. Cash Sales only. $65.
