Matakana Pictures opened 3 June 2005 as a permanent exhibition space for New Zealand and international photographers.
The exhibition schedule was launched with the show, “Solstice”, which was the first of a series of six group exhibitions surveying the best of contemporary exhibiting New Zealand photographers.
The main goal of the gallery was to encourage new artists, and assist established artists to exhibit new work; to create a comprehensive base of contributing photographers, and to work towards the creation of a larger viewing public for contemporary work in photo-based media.
The name Matakana Pictures was a reference to the earlier gallery Real Pictures, which Ian Macdonald founded in Auckland in 1979, and which operated until 1990.
