This Is Not The Red Carpet - 1993
@saraormephotographer
Sara Orme, based in New Zealand, is primarily focused on uncovering the daily life of human experience. After completing a degree in Sociology, majoring in Feminist Studies & Ethnicity, (1987) she later went on to study photography (1993) with a focus on research, documentary and portrait photography.
The diversity in her personal life, blending both her sociologist sensibility with documentary photography, and the desire to create images of the human condition is the source of inspiration for her projects. From feminism to freedom, to exploring cultural identity, to dreamy almost fashion like imagery in between focused always on creating a powerful narrative.
“This Is Not The Red Carpet was shot while still a student of photography and fully immersed in third wave feminism at the time. It has sat in my top drawer waiting since 1993. Waiting for interest in what I had to say to the world. Waiting for my children to grow up and for me to find the confidence to bring it out again. Waiting for a #MeToo movement to make it relevant. Waiting for feminism to stop being a dirty word.
While the famous were gracing the red carpet, I turned my gaze on to the photographers on La Croisette below.
I was the only female photographer amidst a sea of men photographing the mostly obliging, often half naked, sunbathing women who were prepared to do anything for attention and hope they may find fame”.
