Images of Tāmaki Makaurau
{Suite} is pleased to present an exhibition of images by Ans Westra for Artweek Auckland 2020.
Ans Westra is renowned for her photographic work which captures images of everyday life from a distant view point, casting an observer’s eye over the scene, presenting a natural and unposed image. Her images of Tāmaki Makaurau made between 1963 and 1984 show old buildings in the CBD and Aucklanders going about their daily life.
Also included in the exhibition are a series of large scale, vibrant and detailed images of flowers made in the early 2000s. Referred to by the artist as her ‘creative’ practice, Ans says of these works: ‘colour in these images becomes the dominant factor, celebrating the beauty of nature. This work has been healing for my soul and a good counter-balance to my documentation of human life’.
{Suite} Director David Alsop will present two floor talks on the life and work of Ans Westra on Wednesday 14th October at 11am and Saturday 17th October at 2pm at {Suite} Ponsonby - all welcome.
