John Fields (1938-2013) lived and worked in Auckland from 1966-76. During that time he made an exhaustive photographic survey of Auckland and environs, including Victorian architecture, Auckland Motorway and the people and places in and around mostly central Auckland. He also documented historic and noteworthy sites for Heritage New Zealand and for himself. His negatives of this material numbers in the many thousands.
He was a passionate advocate for the environment and noted with alarm the despoliation of the natural environment in and around Auckland. It is in this context that he made the print above, and unusually but significantly titled and dated it noting its orientation.
For him Ihumātao and its historic importance was clearly significant.
