Laree Payne Gallery is delighted to welcome you to our new premises on the banks of the Waikato awa. We are pleased to open the new gallery space with a self-titled solo presentation by Whanganui based photographer, Tia Ranginui (Ngāti Hine Oneone). As an introduction to the artist’s practice, a selection of eight works from Ranginui's rich back catalogue have been put together. The series documents sites of interest to the artist throughout Whanganui and the surrounding purlieus. These sites include the Whanganui Savage Club, the Whanganui awa (as seen below) and the interior of the artists marae which sees the work of her fathers hand on both the floor and the ceiling. Steeped in knowledge and connection to place, Ranginui's works carry an undeniable charge. Recent exhibitions include Tua O Tāwauwa, CAS Gallery, New Plymouth (2020) and He Taura Here, Laree Payne Gallery, Hamilton (2021). Ranginui has an upcoming solo exhibition with City Gallery Wellington, curated by Robert Leonard (2021) and is represented in the public collection of The Dowse Art Museum, Wellington and the Sarjeant Gallery, Whanganui. Ranginui's works currently grace the covers of ArtNews magazine, New Zealand and Art Collector Magazine, Australasia, with editorial cover inside both.
