Whanganui, a UNESCO Creative City of Design since 2021, is home to many of New Zealand’s heritage buildings. Celebrated local photographer Richard Wotton has been documenting buildings, in the city for almost 50 years. Ignoring the picture postcard views, his work highlights the beauty in, functional architecture and catalogues a unique period in the city’s life.
Whanganui film-maker/director Kevin Double first became interested in Wotton’s work when he, saw a Wotton print on his in-laws’ living-room wall. This interest led to the making of a short documentary film, Richard Wotton: Moments Later, which has been selected as a finalist for, screening at the 16th Istanbul International Architecture and Urban Films Festival, to be held in, early October.
The festival attracted 725 entries from 86 countries and 31 documentary finalists were selected.
The Whanganui film, produced by Melita Farley, is the sole Australasian finalist. The, awards will be announced on October 8.
The title Moments Later references the photographer’s work over five decades of documenting, ordinary buildings. These photographs take a few moments to capture at the time but become, increasingly interesting as the years pass, especially when urban development or disasters have a, dramatic impact on buildings not considered worthy as official heritage. Richard’s work is, comprehensive and always motivated by the shared lesson that there may never be another time, so his archive of work is now considerable and unique.
