Ever since I took my first image of a Hydrangea (Mercy Mercer book, published by Michael Lett Publishing, 2009) I’ve been captivated by the repetitive patterns of the flower heads. I find them mesmerising. The repeated pattern appears to shimmer in front of you and have a depth that is often hard to capture within the 2 dimensional medium of photography.

This series of images is a continuation of that fascination I have with patterns that occur in nature.

“I think we can make a case for saying that anything that isn’t purely random has a kind of pattern in it. There must be something in that system that has pulled it away from that pure randomness or at the other extreme, from pure uniformity”. (Philip Ball, excerpt from Patterns in Nature: Why the Natural World Looks the Way it Does, 2016).
