Interview with Peter Peryer by Lynn Freeman for RNZ National
“There was a milieu that came along at exactly the right time for me,” Peryer notes.⁴ In the group that grew up around PhotoForum magazine and related workshops and events, Peryer was connected to a network of people actively thinking about and promoting New Zealand photography as a vital part of the fine arts conversation. Another key element of Peryer’s involvement with PhotoForum was his friendship with John B. Turner, and his access to Turner’s library of photography books, an experience that seems to be a recurring theme in accounts from this era. Imported books on photography were a rare commodity, and were the only way for New Zealanders to access the history of modernist photography at the time. Through Turner’s library, Peryer would have been exposed to the work of canonical modernists as well as that of earlier European photographers such as August Sander, Eugène Atget, Karl Blossfeldt and László Moholy-Nagy, whose work had a definite impact of Peryer’s practice.
