OLD NEW WORLD

A photographic study of the changing face of small town New Zealand.

With a keen eye for detail and irony, Wellington poet and photographer, Mary Macpherson has spent seven years travelling around the country documenting the changing face of small town New Zealand. This has culminated in an intriguing exhibition of 46 colour photographs along with a significant new book of New Zealand photography, entitled Old New World.

Lopdell House Gallery is proud to be the publishers of Mary’s book and will be touring her exhibition to regional art galleries across the country over the coming years.

The striking colour photographs feature buildings, houses, statues and murals to tell the story of a shift from the remains of the traditional New Zealand of the 1950s and 60s to places of boom and prosperity that look very different to our remembered past. Since December 2011, photographer Richard Mahoney has been working (alongside Kristina Pickford - Heritage Adviser & CEHBF Fundraising Committee Member)  on an ongoing project to produce images for the Canterbury Earthquake Heritage Buildings Fund campaign. The Trust was formed in late 2010 to provide financial assistance to owners of ‘Qualifying Heritage Buildings’ so that the precious few heritage buildings which remain after the earthquakes and which are feasible to repair, might be saved.

Mahoney was given considerable freedom to produce photographic works that communicate what he considers “valuable” about these buildings. A notable feature of the newly created CEHBF website  and the ongoing funding campaign, is that all of the new imagery is based on large format, 4×5 colour and black & white sheet film.

Norm & Noeleen are two personal photographic series which reflect the story of many of the aged in our society.

Bernie Harfleet’s work is in black and white and records his father Norm (89) over a seven-month period - from his initial cancer diagnosis to after his death. Donna Sarten’s colour photographs document her mother Noeleen (85) and her increasing dementia. Both Norm and Noeleen have a determination to stay in their own homes, while at the same time battling increasing health issues and the disempowerment age can bring.

Issue 5: Elegy has just been posted online and includes the work of  New Zealand documentary photographer, David Cook.

In the text that accompanies his photographs, David explains:

“This series of images is based on a journey through my world; following the parallel arteries of River Road and the Waikato River as they snake their way from my home city of Hamilton to Ngaruawahia. It’s a journey of only 20 kilometres, but the mosaic of shifting ecologies in these spaces is magnificent.  The journey was repeated many times, in the hunt for images that speak about the ecological past, present and future.”

Dark Sky

On 6 June 2012 the second and last Transit of Venus of this century will occur.  Departing from this extraordinary event, the Adam Art Gallery exhibition Dark Sky delves into the relationship between photography and astronomy, asking how and why we seek to capture the skies.

Dark Sky is an exhibition conceived by Geoffrey Batchen, leading photographic historian and theorist and Professor of Art History, and curated with Christina Barton, Director of the Adam Art Gallery, Victoria University of Wellington.

Opening: Tuesday 1 May 2012, 6pm
Hon Christopher Finlayson Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage will open the exhibition.

Public Programme: Wednesday 2 May, 12 noon

Bad Science
Artist Simon Ingram and physicist Melanie Johnston-Hollitt discuss Ingram’s radio astronomy and the challenge of bridging the art/science divide.
